This 5 Module Course specifically familiarizes front-liners working with children or in a child centered institution on the concept of child abuse perpetrated by front-liners themselves, child peers, support staff and child educators. It helps them to better understand the indicating factors of children who have or are experiencing abuse in the education institution and at home. It takes a step further into the existing laws of child abuse in Lagos State as it discusses the sections that addresses abuses as well as an introductory discuss on children in conflict with the law.
This module does not replace existing professional methods or strategies but it further strengthens them as it aims at improving the skills of front-liners such as Social workers, Counsellors and Support Staff. Participants will upon completion, receive a completion certificate.
SPECIFIC COURSE OBJECTIVES

Safeguarding Policy in all Schools. - To improve the overall efficiency and professionalism of social workers, teachers,
support staff / care givers in dealing with children - To prevent and mitigate the occurrence of child abuse in Lagos State.

- Module I: Child Protection in the Education Institutions IChildren in education institutions in Lagos State experience and witness violence. Corporal Punishment was banned in all school within the State however, children still experience physical abuse, sexual abuse and emotional abuse in schools. Experiencing or witnessing violence can have lasting consequences for children. Children exposed to violence are more likely to hold toxic view as well as gender inequitable views in adulthood and to accept violence either as a victim or perpetrator in future relationships; The Circle of Violence Continues6

- Module III: Childs Rights and the Law IIChildren’s rights cover the ages 0 to 18 years and they are armored through the lens of the child rights law of Lagos State 2015 because children are the easiest victims of abuses of power and authority by their teachers, caregivers, and the society itself. As the child rights emphasizes, the best interest of the child is paramount in every situation; this interest includes, the fundamental human rights, rights to directly participate in all matters that influence their wellbeing, and rights to education, shelter, health services, name etc. This module is a continuation of Module I in the Safeguarding Children Course instructed by Mr. Taiwo Akinlami.5
- Module IV: Children in Contact with the LawThis module explains the area of child rights and juvenile justice system in Nigeria, cued from international standards and legislations. It focuses on the System of Justice for children in conflict with the Law and System of Protection for children who have experienced abuse/ violence. Teachers, Social workers and other professionals working with children will realize that this module is particularly sensitive and it explains the numerous of child rights violations, where violence in institutions must be deplored and where the response is not always child friendly. This part of the law is where the State exerts power in response to child offenses and its interference represses non-criminal behavior.6
- Module V: Referral PathwayThis module explains professional actions to be taken by a DSCPO in schools and other Child Centered Institutions at the discovery of child who has been abused and children who are suspected to be in contact/ conflict with the law. This module also explains some tips to adopt in implementing the Lagos State SCPP in schools and other Child Centered Institutions9
